In New York City there has been talk of an amazing new show on broadway called AFTER MIDNIGHT. This new play is about an electrifying time when The Cotton Club was the place to be.
After Midnight, Broadway’s new smash-hit musical, combines the big-band songs of Duke Ellington and the best dancing in town. A company of New York’s best singers, dancers and tappers join forces with The Jazz at Lincoln Center All-Stars, a 17-piece band created by jazz great Wynton Marsalis. It’s a glamorous, high-energy celebration of Harlem’s legendary Cotton Club.
The musical is set back in time to the 1930s at Harlem's famed hot spot THE COTTON CLUB where many great African American legends where showcased at.
A LITTLE HISTORY
The Cotton Club was a New York night club located first in the neighborhood and then in the midtown Harlem Theater District . The club operated from 1923 to 1940, most notably during America's Prohibition Era The club was a whites-only establishment even though it featured many of the best black entertainers and jazz musicians of the era including , Lena HorneFletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington,Adelaide Hall, Count Basie, Bessie Smith, Cab Calloway, The Nicholas Brothers, Ella Fitzgerald, Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, and Ethel Waters. During its heyday, the Cotton Club served as a hip meeting spot featuring regular "Celebrity Nights" on Sundays which featured celebrity guests.
